Front Door Security
When upgrading your door security, start with the obvious. 70% of burglaries are committed through the front door and almost a third force the door lock to gain access*. The more high-quality security you have, the less likely that an intruder will attempt to gain entry. It is easy to start and can be as simple as fitting solid secure door hardware and furniture. Firstly, as a minimum check that your door lock has a BS Kitemark. You can easily determine this by looking for the heart-shaped symbol on the lock itself. This accreditation gives you the reassurance that your lock is protected against drilling, picking, cutting and forcing. One of the must-haves for the front and the back door is a 5 Lever Mortice Lock. Many insurance companies suggest that it should be fitted to all external timber doors.

You may want to consider adding a door viewer or door chain. These solutions are highly recommended as they allow you to quickly identify who is at your doorstep without opening the door. If you’re interested in more easy tips for how to increase door security, read our expert advice here.

Got a question?
What are the security standards?
• The British Standard (BS) is the national standards body of the United Kingdom. It provides technical standards on a wide range of products and supplies certification. It is a symbol of trust, safety and quality.
• BSI Internet of Things (IoT) is an independent standard for internet applications, data and devices.
• Secured by Design is the official police security initiative. This accreditation indicates that a product passed rigorous testing and meets the standards set by police officers.
• Sold Secure is an independent, security product certification agency. They work closely with the Home Office, Police and insurance providers.
What is the difference between traditional home alarms and smart security systems?
Traditional alarm systems
are wired and usually include only a siren. When the siren is triggered, the sound may deter the potential burglar, but if you are not at home, you are relying purely on your neighbours to contact and notify the police.
On the other hand, smart home security systems are wireless and are connected via the internet. Allowing you to access and operate the system remotely using a smartphone from anywhere in the world and at any time. The digital connection
allows instant notifications, so as soon as the alarm is triggered, you will get an alert and will be able to take necessary actions yourself. Additional accessories like smart security cameras allow you to monitor what is happening in your home live and optional cover plans can upgrade your security with
services like professional monitoring. If the alarm triggers, the monitoring service will access the installed security cameras to assess if there is a genuine alarm. The security professionals will determine an appropriate course of action and notify the authorities if needed.
How do I check if my door lock is secure?
The easiest way is to look
for the BS Kitemark on the faceplate of the lock, which is visible when you open the door. It is also good to check the specific standard number, which
should be stamped below the heart-shaped logo. For a mortice lock, the standard number should be BS 3621 or BS 8621. For a cylinder only, the lock should have a Kitemark symbol and then 1 or 3 stars, compliant with the TS 007 standard. 3 Stars gives you maximum security.
